Axel is the eighth member of Organization XIII, a group of (obviously) thirteen nobodies that banded together in order to regain their lost hearts. You see, Nobodies, in the Kingdom Hearts universe, are the leftover shells of people whose hearts were consumed by The Heartless. Devoid of their hearts, Nobodies tend to be highly amoral, antisocial, and unfeeling in general. Axel is no exception to this rule of general heartless villainy. No, what makes Axel stand out is the fact that he's just as much of a jerk to his co-workers. Prior to arriving in Rivelata, Axel had willingly shanked a higher-ranking member (Vexen) at the behest of Marluxia. Granted, it was part of a scheme to rout out Marluxia's plan to betray the Organization and overthrow Xemnas, the leader, but Axel wasn't about to let Marluxia know that.

Apparently, after killing Vexen he went on to betray Larxene, who was working with Marluxia, and to kill Zexion. This version of Axel didn't know this, although he had definitely planned it and was not surprised when Larxene and Zexion confronted the man they both hated more than each other.

After arriving in Rivelata, Axel made the accquaintance of two similarly-minded people - Koki Kariya and Sho Minamimoto, the owners of Junkhouse Ramen. Sho hired Axel (without telling Kariya), and soon Axel had a job working at the ramen joint. Gradually the three of them became a sort of Three Stooges, with pranking and mocking each other being their form of entertainment. Behind closed doors, they're also conspiring to overthrow Queen Immaculda - but with Axel's alarming capability at being a manipulative, two-faced, backstabbing sonovabitch, the general population isn't the wiser. For his part, Axel plays model citizen - and will never reveal that he's roped Zexion, Antubis, Yoshia "Joshua" Kiryu and Hiruma into conspiring with him as well.

Recently, Axel was pecked in the face by one of the Tricksters, resulting in his very own werecurse. Every new moon he turns into a cardinal. Deliberately lying also triggers the curse, meaning Axel has to play it VERY, VERY carefully, or all his plans could unravel. Being someone who relies on deception to get what he wants, the curse has been a great source of frustration to him, but it is one he's more than willing to overlook. Apparently, Axel prioritizes lying and playing dirty over physical pain.

One bright spot in Axel's black record is Roxas, his best friend. Axel was overjoyed (as much as a Nobody can be) at the arrival of his friend, and the two have been living in Kariya's apartment above the ramen shop.

Axel, along with Larxene and Zexion, has recently been kidnapping Rivelatians in order to conduct a ritual that creates resonance crystals. These crystals allow the wielder 75% of their maximum power - of course, the process to extract the heart is very, very gory and involves physical cutting out of hearts. Axel holds down the vicitms and disposes of the bodies, along with Rudy Cooper.

The Organization's latest victim was Sho Minamimoto, who actually went willingly. Sho got way more than he bargained on.
