In the beginning of time, God said, "Let there be light."
Aziraphale has been around for (literally) an eternity. He is one of God's angels, specifically a
Principality. In fact, he once guarded the Gates of Eden, with flaming sword in hand...until he lent it to Adam and Eve since she
was expecting after all, and it would be awful to let them off into the big, dangerous world without some protection. Needless to say, it was a Very Bad Thing to do, and Aziraphale felt very guilty about it afterwards. Eden was also the first place Aziraphale met Crawly, later Crowley, but we'll get to that later.
For thousands of years, he had been down on Earth, helping people in whichever way he can. Aziraphale owns a book shop in Soho, London, England though he does everything in his power not to actually sell a book. He is an avid book collector, especially of prophecy books. The angel worships God, but he also worships books and treats them with great care and love. Aziraphale also fancies small (sushi) restaurants, antiques, crossword puzzles, silver snuffboxes, and tartan.
As an angel, he is obviously against all things evil, and be-bop (ie: Velvet Underground).
There is one exception, however. Around the year 1000 AD, Aziraphale struck up an Arrangement with one Anthony J. Crowley, a demon, in which they would work together, and sometimes help each other. ("...it'd get done anyway, and being sensible about it gave everyone more free time and cut down on expenses.") Over the year, adversaries became friends, and occasionally take walks in St. James Park or eat brunch at the Ritz.
Aziraphale's time on Earth was threatened when the Anti-Christ was born, signifying the upcoming Apocalypse. It was a right, old shame since the angel had taken a liking for Earth and human kind. Though the Powers That Be want Aziraphale to allow the Apocalypse to commence forth, he decides to join Crowley and a handful of mortals in stopping the end of the world.
Thankfully, the Anti-Christ, Adam had a heart, and decided to halt the End of Time. He rights all the wrong that had happened as a result of preparation for the Apocalypse, and everything returns to normal. Aziraphale and Crowley are back at the Ritz, sipping wine and discussing their day's work.
That is, until Aziraphale was shipped off to Rivelata.
