Bak Chan is the Leader of the Asia Branch of the Black Order, a religious group with ties to the Pope which exists to fight Akuma, grisly creations of a man known only as the Earl of the Millenium. The Order includes Exorcists, those blessed with the ability to accomodate Innocence - strange, divine cubes of an unknown substance or origin which can be shaped into weapons.

Bak, however, is not an accomodator and his role in the war against the Akuma army is that of a supporter. He oversees all activities at the Asia Branch and also heads the Science team. Thanks to a seal placed by his great-grandfather on the cave in which the Asia Branch is located, Bak can also control those who guard it, including Fou, who is the crystalized essence of the guardian itself. This he accomplishes with his blood, using a ceremonial dagger to cut runes into his palm.

The Chan family has been incorporated into the Black Order ever since its birth, as it was originally founded by a German wizard whom Bak is directly descended from (despite his Chinese appearance). His family is especially well known for their knowledge of magic and alchemy, and they have been potion-makers for centuries.

Bak himself is a strange man, dedicated fully to the Order and their task at hand. He's incredibly smart and always excelled in school, passing easily with flying marks. He has been considered the "mysterious intellect of Asia" and is the driving force behind the entire Asia Branch. Raised as well as a prince might be, Bak has a large ego and thinks very highly of himself as a result.

Despite all this, Bak has some amusing habits, including that of bursting into hives when he gets too excited. He also has a bit of a temper and has been known to blow up whenever anyone either A) makes fun of his height; B) compares him negatively to his rival Komui Lee; or C) threatens to spill his secret crush on Komui's Exorcist sister, Lenalee Lee.
