History:
The details of Hijikata’s past are foggy. All that’s known of his family is that he once saw his father in a bra, but even that fact is questionable. His past was violent, and before he met Kondo Isao, a man who would later become the Commander of the Shinsengumi, Hijikata wandered all over the countryside picking fights and being generally horrible. After he met Kondo, Hijikata pledged his undying loyalty to the man and went on to become Kondo’s right-hand man, and the “brains” behind the Shinsengumi.

Currently, he is the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. We say "currently" because this guy has a ridiculous number of subordinates out to kill him at any given arc. Seriously.

About the Shinsengumi:

The Shinsengumi is the historic special police force of the the Edo-period Shogunate. Often called the "Shogunate's dogs" or "wolves," they are ruthless and uncompromising, enforcing all of the Shogunate's rules, big or small. They employ all sorts of tactics to succeed on their various missions and duties. Blasting cars out of streets for traffic control, cooking curry for ninja-assassins holding hostages, and cross-dressing are perfectly acceptable, as is "offensive protection" of VIPs, which involves roasting said VIP over a bonfire on a crucifix. Seppuku is greatly encouraged.

Kondou Isao, their commander, is the unexpectedly inspirational man who used to led his men from being nothing but simple students studying in a rundown dojo to being the most powerful and feared police force in Edo. For this reason, most of the men in the Shinsengumi are undyingly loyal to Kondou. Some, like Hijikata, could care less about "establishing order" and "protecting the Shogunate" and simply serve in the Shinsengumi out of loyalty towards Kondou.

Relationships:
Mayonnaise: His one true love. He will wax poetic and gush over this substance. Unfailingly, he will defend and love it. Will choose it over most anything else in the world, including girlfriends.

Bad Movies: Addicted to soap operas and movies. Will cry over some bad and generally un-touching scenes. Even cried watching Aliens vs. Yakuza. Please avenge Kazu-aniki, Ginpachi-sensei!
