For all intents and purposes, Minamino Shuuichi is just another teenage boy. A little smarter than most, a little more effeminate, a little gentler and soft-spoken, but for the most part, normal. But appearances can be deceiving.

In actual fact, Minamino Shuuichi is actually a fox-demon named Kurama - over 1000 years old, a legendary thief back in the Demon World. He was injured 19 years ago in a heist gone horribly wrong, and with the last of his energy, wrenched his soul from the Demon World and fled to the Human World - where he implanted his soul in the unborn child of one human woman: Minamino Shiori.

Kurama's original plan was to spend 10 years in Human World, regain his energy, and leave once again - but things don't always go as planned. Instead, he ended up loving his human mother, and remaining for much longer than he had intended - just to keep her happy.

When he was fifteen, his mother fell dangerously ill, driving Kurama to take part in a theft of treasures from the Spirit World - his share of which was a mirror fabled to grant its wielder one wish. This theft is precisely what brought him into contact with the beings who would become his closest friends - Hiei, Urameshi Yusuke, and Kuwabara Kazuma.

The four have their problems, but they see each other through mission after mission - working as Spirit Detectives for the Spirit World. Or, more precisely, Yusuke works as a Detective - Hiei and Kurama are on probation for that pesky theft.

Threats of demonic invasion, two bloody martial arts tournaments, an old Spirit Detective hell-bent on destroying the entire human race - they get through it all. And in the end, Kurama decides to let go of his old life - for now, at least. He returns to the Human World, to his family, and resumes the guise of Minamino Shuuichi.

What comes next, well... Who knows?
