HISTORY: A fifteen year old with a talent for graffiti and psyches, who wakes up on the floor with amnesia in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Not much is known about Neku before he wakes up in Shibuya with a strange pin in his hand that allows him to read the minds of people around him. Better yet, he doesn't remember ever coming to Shibuya or anything about himself aside from his name. Whilst he's pondering all of this, a weird timer appears on his hand, and strange monsters attack him that the people around him don't seem to be able to see. Neku runs for his supposed 'life' away from the monsters that follow him, Noise, and on the way runs into Shiki.
Shiki makes him forge a pact with her, and they become partners. Together, they take down the Noise. Shiki soon explains they are playing the 'Reaper's Game', and that they have to play it for seven days. Fail, and face erasure from the UG, the world that the people surrounding them can't see. Win, and get a second chance at life in the RG, the real world.
Ever since appearing in the UG, Neku had a talent for using the pins he was granted. He could use just about all of them with absolute ease, and reading minds with the main pin was a breeze for him. In way, he sort of got used to it, so the fact the pin is just a pin in Rivelata will unnerve him.
Anyway, with the help of Shiki and two others named Beat and Rhyme, Neku managed to survive to the seventh day and defeat the final boss and get a second shot at life! With a promise to meet Shiki again in the RG, as a date, he went off into the light for another chance at life ... or so he thought. One of the games composers told him only one player would be able to go back to life- and that was Shiki, since she'd ranked the most points during the game. Neku insisted he play the game again as she returned to life. As a result of finishing the game, Neku had his previous price, his memories, returned to him. His new price for playing the game again... was Shiki Misaki.
So he was sent back to day number 1, week 2, so he can save Shiki and get out of the game. Or that's what was supposed to happen- he reawakens on a ship that was definitely not Shibuya.
This might be concidered a slight spoiler, you have been warned;
Neku was- is, probably- effectively, dead. He's not alive, which is why he was in the Reaper's Game. So yes, he doesn't fear it.
PERSONALITY, STRENGTHS, AND WEAKNESSES: Neku doesn't have a clue about anything in Shibuya, so just goes with it, since, heck, he just wants to get out. He doesn't care about anyone else at all, even Shiki, who opens up to him slightly but he remains silent and unoptimistic, doubting a lot of things she says to him. He doubts friendship and the fact Shiki holds it in high regard. Friends make you hurt when you have to part from them, so in Neku's logic, why have them? He even goes as far as to wear headphones all the time to block people out, and he hates the crowded streets of Shibuya merely for the sheer amount of people. He mostly goes against everything Shiki has to say, and at first, refuses to call her by name or really even acknowledge her.
He does have some sense of courtesy, and he usually leaves the nastier things he wants to say unsaid, though he still thinks them with a slight disgruntled and a 'huh, you're kidding, right?' look. He did eventually open up to her and encourage her when she was down- since she did the same to him. She felt bad and hated herself, yet Neku stated he liked her the way she was. He grew attached to her and she became important to him despite the bad start they got off too.
