I can tell this is going to be long. Just who the hell is he?
The title character of the series and Rivelata's resident housework godmode. I.e., the butler to quite possibly the most molestable shouta of questionable anal virginity in the world.

Where's he from?
Set in 19th century Victorian England, Black Butler tells the tale of a beautiful little boy living in a humongous mansion with his beautiful butler and frolicking down the streets of England making new friends and helping neighbors along the way. Oh, and the sun is blue, grasses grow on Coca Cola, and UPN's fall season is actually worth watching. In reality, the beautiful little boy is Ciel Phantomhive, twelve-year-old and mastermind behind a family fortune made off of selling incredible toys. Sebastian Michaelis is his picture-perfect butler. Together with opium-dealers and hyperactive fiancées they investigate mafia and serial killers, all the while trying not to get kidnapped and sacrificed on altars.

A housework godmode? So...what can he do?
When we say that Sebastian is a perfect butler, we mean it in the strictest sense. Capable of matching the finest teas to perfect china and whipping up incredibly creative meals to go on that china, a household full of the most disastrous servants possible is no obstacle to his buttling finesse. He decorates and grows gardens, cleans up rooms full of washing-machine foam, organizes meals, and sculpts life-size sculptures of buildings and people out of chocolate all within a single afternoon. His manners are impeccable, his smile unfaltering, and his white gloves perpetually pristine.

It's almost super-human.

In truth, Sebastian is actually an immortal devil summoned up from the depths of hell by Ciel, and is bound to the boy because of a contract that they made. While well-hidden, sometimes Sebastian's less-than-human traits manifest themselves in a cold and sadistic smile and his long and graphic inner thoughts. He plants silverware into men's foreheads, stops bullets, kung-fu fights Indian bodyguards, and doesn't hesitate to have his fun when he can, and will push people off cliffs, wreck cars, and sometimes even hurt his own master with his incisive words. Being sliced in half by a chainsaw and shot many, many times from all directions elicit no more reaction than lengthy complaints about the ruined state of his clothes. He does, however, show great affection towards cats, as they are adorable and quiet and not readily available in Hell. Sometimes, he shows the same kind of affection to Ciel...what this means, no one knows.

If I meet him a dark, dark alley and it's 2 A.M. and I'm defenseless, what should I do?
You don't have to run like hell. Yet. Well, maybe. On the surface, Sebastian is eternally polite and responsible, always willing to accommodate a guest and dedicated to providing the highest quality of service possible. Which, in Sebastian's case, if you askinsistently enough he could get you everything you could ever dream of, from a simple afternoon tea to the laundry to an compilation so long of names, activities, and habits that you begin to wonder how he managed to researchEvery Single Human Being On This Planet in a single morning. He'll be nice. He'll be so civilized it hurts. It'll be kind of creepy, but you don't need to worry.

On the other hand, Sebastian's real personality isn't like that. Sebastian's a demon--every single inch. Though psychics won't have the power to glance into his thoughts, if they did they would find extensive monologues of the graphic nature, especially when Sebastian's surrounded by idiots. He has no patience for incompetence or foolishness. He likes hurting people--a lot. And he's very...creative. Even Ciel, the most important person to Sebastian, is not above escaping this sadism. And as Sebastian already has a contract going for him it's unlikely he'll accept another. But it's highly unlikely you'll meet up with him like this. So you don't have to worry, mostly. Unless you're an insignificant nobody who's messed with his gardens or cakes or masters or all three. In that case, run for your fucking life.

The question of whether Sebastian can feel emotions is a tricky one. For the sake of plot, it is best left unanswered.

With all this shit going down, where do his loyalties lie?
Easy. With Ciel. Sebastian's loyal to Ciel--completely loyal. He will not abandon Ciel for anything. Their contract was made such that even if Sebastian dies, he will protect Ciel and follow the boy's orders until Ciel's death.
Because of those terms, Sebastian follows every single order Ciel gives him. And the most important of those orders was:
No matter who Sebastian is serving now, far from being duplicitous or self-serving, Sebastian is loyal to Ciel and Ciel alone.

So what's he doing in Rivelata?!
Finding a way out. To leave Ciel alone right now is a serious breach of contract, so Sebastian really is trying his hardest every single day to get back. Now, if Ciel was here, this wouldn't be a problem. (HINT HINT HINT APP HIM AND BE SHOWERED BY ALL THE PERKS OF BEING SEBASTIAN'S MASTER.)

On the other hand, he realizes that he needs certain connections to aid him him in doing so, so as of yet Sebastian's done also:

• Killed Kuja.
• Become Kuja's butler.
• Build the Estate to house Kuja.
• Cook like whoa.
• Build gardens like whoa.
• Serve certain residents of Rivelata with tea and scones and etc.
• Fight Grell.
• Kept cats.
