Character InfoFANDOM: Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
TIME PERIOD: Post-movie
Character BackgroundSpirit isn't a horse, really. He's a mustang, and yes, there is a difference. Mustangs are wild and free creatures, part of the wind and ye ol' American West culture, unable to be tamed, broken, or any such phrase of the word. He tried to have the whole 'horse' thing pushed on him for a while. In fact, the entire movie consists of humans (or 'two-leggers') trying to convert this wild mustang to horsedom. First, it was a Colonel of the US Army (sources say that he's supposed to be Colonel Custer himself). When the use of force and animal-cruelty didn't work, and Spirit escapes the camp, a Native American Lakota by the name of Little Creek tries his hand at it. This time, with the use of kindness and love. And his female mount named Rain. It almost works. Almost. Tying him to Rain certainly helped. But Spirit can't stop thinking of home and racing eagles. Because he's a
mustang, not a horse. Silly two-leggers.
Then, after the Lakota village is invaded by the Army, Spirit is taken away to work for the Transcontinental Railroad. They almost convert him to horsedom, too. Almost. Until they made the mistake of not realizing that Spirit is a helluva lot smarter than most animals should be, and when he realizes that they were planning on moving their little railroad onto his homeland, shit goes down. And blows up. Yup, he plays dead, frees the other horses, and without the support of the hoofed slaves, law of gravity forces the engine to go rolling down the mountain and exploding.
Spirit is saved from certain death by Little Creek, and after a canyon showdown with Colonel-supposed-Custer, he is taken to the Lakota village, this time in the process of recovering itself. However, Little Creek sets both Spirit and Rain free. He even gives Spirit his name, finally the one two-legger that realizes that Spirit is a mustang and not a horse.
