Character Background
Stefan Salvatore is the younger brother of Damon Salvatore, born in Renaissance Italy during the 1500's. His father, as previously mentioned, was Conte de Salvatore, a wealthy man of Florence. Stefan's mother developed complications during her pregnancy with Stefan, and died upon his birth. While Stefan grew up coddled and cuddled by his father, his older brother was extremely resentful of him, leading Stefan to believe that Damon blamed him for his mother's death. Also, Conte de Salvatore raised Stefan to be the successor of the family in spite of the being the younger, causing an even more tension between the two brothers.

Misfortune returns to Stefan when he becomes a young man and falls in love with a beautiful German noblewoman named Katherine von Swarthzchild. While love can become a misfortune in itself, what makes it even more unfortunate is that Damon also falls in love with her! As if mother's death and the family business weren't enough to come between the two, now it's a girl. The two brothers, of course, fight for her affections, and Katherine eventually comes to them revealing that she's a vampire, and sharing her blood with them. She also states that she's in love with both of them, and wants all three of them to be together.

Threesomes are one thing, and kind of cool. However, a threesome with your rival brother is something else entirely and is definitely not cool at all. Hearing that Katherine wanted the two brothers to share her was not something that either Stefan or Damon wanted to hear. And so, Katherine kills herself, perhaps with the idea that the two brothers would become close and comfort each other over her death. Instead, Stefan and Damon literally kill each other, Damon stabbing Stefan first, and then Stefan taking him down with the last of his strength. When they wake up, they are vampires.

Unfortunately for Stefan, given his loyal and steadfast personality, when it comes to vampiric powers, he got the short end of the stick. He refuses to drink human blood, surviving only on animals. Because of this, his vampire abilities are considerably weaker than the average vampire. He can even only shape shift into one creature, a falcon. He wears the same ring as Damon, a silver band embedded with a lapis lazuli stone that protects him from the sunlight.

As if his last lesson in love hadn't been enough, in the present time, Stefan crosses paths with another girl, Elena Gilbert, who, coincedentally, looks exactly like Katherine. Naturally, Stefan falls in love with her, and while Katherine's image probably heavily influenced him in that direction, he discovers later that Elena is made of different cloth, and one that he finds much more appealing. But history likes to repeat itself, and Damon interferes once again this time to take Elena away from him.

Stefan comes to Rivelata during his fight with the vampire who had made Katherine, an Original named Klaus. While Klaus is literally beating Stefan to death with sticks, Damon struck by lightning and unable to fight, suddenly Stefan sees the world go black and wakes up to find himself on a boat with a strange old-fashioned journal and quill lying by his side.
