. . . The novice himself was small, and appeared to be quite young, an impish smile on his face and unreadable, sparkling eyes—the jewels in an ancient statue, pale little chips of colored glass. His skin was very pale; perhaps he'd never seen the sun. When he stood he did so at a jaunty angle, hands on his hips, as though he were some mother scolding a naughty child. The effect was almost comical, especially because his hair, jaggedly cut to his chin, was pure white.
