Zidane Tribal - Rivelata
BACKGROUND: Zidane was found in the city of Lindblum at a very young age, and was taken in by a man called Baku. Baku - leader of a theatre troupe by the name of Tantalus - treated him much like a son, and Zidane was eventually accepted into the group. Tantalus traveled from place to place, acting out various well-known plays, but this was simply a disguise for the group's real identity as thieves. Often they would put on impressive performances while other members took advantage of the distractions to steal what they wanted. Zidane proved to be a natural at both stealing and acting, his body and mind as sharp and nimble as the other, and Tantalus became his family.

Growing up, Zidane often questioned his life and where he'd come from. He had been born with a prehensile monkey-like tail, which, while not too unusual for Gaia's standards, was unusual when coupled with the fact that the only thing he could remember of his origins was a strange blue light. More than once, he left the troupe to travel the world in some attempt to discover his past and his homeland, but he found nothing. Whenever he returned, Baku would beat him for disloyalty, but it still wouldn't discourage Zidane's curiosity.

Eventually, when Zidane was a teen, Tantalus' quarry moved onto bigger forms of treasure: Princess Garnet of Alexandria. They successfully performed a play on her sixteenth birthday and secretly kidnapped her, but the plan went disastrously wrong when they crash-landed in a forest and the princess was missing, presumably dead. While Baku's main concern was his group, Zidane left Tantalus once again to go after her, both out of a combination of his weakness for a pretty girl and his strong sense of morality. Throughout the game both his flirtatiousness around women and his surprising empathy and selflessness are shown, whether for friends, rivals or strangers alike.

After rescuing Garnet, along with the help of Steiner, a knight sworn to protect the princess, and the timid black mage, Vivi, among other members who eventually joined the group, Zidane was pulled into an adventure that could decide the fate of the world. Garnet revealed that she wanted to be stolen, and wanted to run away from her mother, Queen Brahne, who was gradually becoming more and more corrupt, greedy and power-hungry. Using black mage technology, she invaded other nations and easily crushed them. Garnet attempted to put a stop to her mother's plans with the help of the party. While there was some conflict in the group, Zidane generally acted as leader of the party and charmed those around him with his upbeat, playful personality and his less obvious, more mature and understanding side.

Later, it was revealed that Queen Brahne had been corrupted by a mysterious man named Kuja, who seemed intent on causing the deaths of thousands. When she was eventually killed by him and Garnet crowned queen of Alexandria, Zidane found that he missed her and what before had been light-hearted flirting had turned into love in their travels together. Eventually Kuja destroyed Alexandria, and so Garnet and the rest of the group head off after Kuja again.

This lead them to another world called Terra, a 'parasite' world feeding off of Gaia to survive, where Zidane finally discovered his past. He was created by a man named Garland, who explained that he was a Genome, a vessel designed like many other identical Genomes. Their purpose was to eventually contain the soul of a Terran once their world was restored. Garland had also created Kuja, a special Genome containing a soul known as an 'Angel of Death'. His purpose was to spread widespread destruction at such a level it would disrupt Gaia's cycle of souls and replace them with Terra's. In doing so, Terra would be restored. Zidane was a replacement to Kuja once his limited life came to a close, and, enraged upon learning this, Kuja had left Zidane in the very world he planned to destroy twelve years ago.

Upon discovering his past and original purpose, Zidane was distraught, but he quickly came to his senses and realised that his true purpose was to protect those he cared for. Garland went on to mention that Kuja's life was limited and he didn't have long left to live. Hearing this, Kuja went into a Trance, a state of heightened power caused by strong emotion, and killed Garland and destroyed Terra. The party got away with the other Genomes, and Kuja turned his attention to destroying Gaia and the crystal - which was the source of all life. The group battled Kuja one last time, who was defeated and near killed.

Although Kuja was left behind for dead, Zidane felt empathy for him because of their similar origins. Despite the rest of the group's protests, he went back to rescue him-- with a promise that whatever happened, he would return to Garnet. However, this attempt ultimately failed, and Zidane had been missing and presumed dead during that time. In reality, he has been taken to Rivelata.

Rivelata
One of the first residents to arrive in Rivelata, Zidane was firmly and openly opposed to the Queen from the get-go. He wanted nothing more than for everyone to return home, and was hoping it would all be reversed in a matter of days. Most of all, he wanted to return to uphold his promise to Garnet.

However, things are never that easy. As days changed into weeks, things became a lot more complicated. Kuja arrived, who Zidane had watched die with his own eyes. Now he's in Rivelata, alive, well, and seemingly happy with his second chance, Zidane began to reconsider his opinion that everyone should be taken back to their respective times. They haven't had the happiest of pasts together, but Zidane is willing to overlook all that and forgive who he now considers to be his brother.

To add to his confusion, Garnet, more commonly known to Zidane as "Dagger", appeared in Rivelata. She is from far in his past, and knows only the beginning of their adventures and what transpired. Most importantly, she doesn't remember their mutual feelings for one another. But how could he even begin to explain any of it? Should he?

While he considers his problem, he continues to show his opposition to the Queen by assisting in the rescue effort.
